Experienced Leadership Delivering Results for Our Community

Hi, I’m Troy Donté Prestwood, Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner for 8A04, and Chairman of Advisory Neighborhood Commission 8A. I  represent the great residents of Anacostia and Hillsdale. I’m a fourth-generation native Washingtonian, small business owner, and a life-long dedicated public servant.

I have always stayed connected to my hometown. After graduating from DCPS' Duke Ellington School of the Arts, I joined AmeriCorps as a VISTA service member where I was assigned to the former East Capitol Dwellings Public Housing projects. It was there that I saw first-hand how public policy, both good and bad, can greatly influence the paths of peoples and communities. It was also there that I learned the power of community organizing for our most vulnerable residents like seniors and children to ensure they can access basic human rights like safe housing, food, education, and secure neighborhoods. In fact, this is where I saw government, the private sector, nonprofit world, and the faith community work in tandem to uplift a struggling community; something I believe we need to see more of today.

I went on to attend college, bouncing around a few schools including the University of the District of Columbia, until landing at Howard University. I carried a full course load by day while helping customers ship packages at FedEx by night. Somehow, I found time to co-found District Chronicles community newspaper and remain politically active both on campus and in the community.

After becoming the first in my family to graduate college with a bachelor of art’s degree in journalism and political science, I continued to work in news and as an associate educator in Prince George’s and Montgomery counties. But I recognized the growing need to organize the next generation of young leaders in D.C.’s East of the River neighborhoods. So I help co-found River East Emerging Leaders (r.e.e.l.), a leadership collective created to engage and empower the community. I also brought my first home in Anacostia and served as the first president of our homeowners’ association.

I went on to graduate school at American University and after completing my studies,  received several job offers in television and public relations far away from home. But I soon learned the health of the woman who raised me—my grandmother—took a turn for the worse.  Simply put, there was no way I was leaving the person who “rescued me” at a time when all earth around me was sinking sand just to be a talking head "on-air."  So, I stayed and worked in the communications shop for a higher education association. I then jumped ship and started a public relations and business consultancy right here in Ward 8. In my work, I advocate for issues I care about like expanding access to education, health, and economic opportunities for historically marginalized communities. Some of the other notable things I've done is co-founded the Duke Ellington School of the Arts Alumni Association where I helped raise money for scholarships; I helped organize the Howard University School of Communications Alumni Association; and became an executive officer with the Ward 8 Democrats.

I love my city, my ward and my community. It has been an honor representing my neighbors and helping them navigate the maze that can be the District government.

The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. once said:

"Everybody can be great ... because anybody can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't have to make your subject and verb agree to serve. You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love."

These words were sowed into me as a child by my grandmother a generation ago and I believe they still ring true today.
